Long form videos are usually longer horizontal videos of several minutes, made mainly for YouTube. Long form video is often used when a story, process or piece of expertise needs more explanation than fits into the 60 seconds of a short form video. Think of podcasts, interviews or explainer videos.

Examples of long form video

Founder stories, aftermovies and in-depth explainer videos often work best as long form. The showcase video I made for New Story is now used at events and in presentations, something that only works with the time and depth of long form video.

Why long form video works

YouTube rewards watch time, not just views. The longer people watch a video, the more often YouTube recommends it. YouTube is also the platform where long form comes closest to short form: 49% of users engage most with videos over 60 seconds, compared to 52% with shorter videos, a much smaller gap than on most other platforms (Sprout Social, 2026). Long form video gives you room to show a problem, the approach and the result one after another.
